Totem Pole Restoration News
by John Welch
TotemRenew
You can see we are now repainting the Totem Pole. I will try to stain the bottom two figures. It will be sprayed with a solution that will hopefully keep the beetles out by killing them. Again it will allow the pole to repeal water and still allow moisture to excape from the pole. The bottom also was badly infested with Carpenter ants, bugs and some termites. We have bored into the pole and put a solution that will kill the bugs and help preserve the pole by killing the dry rot as well. We have removed almost all  of the bad places and will replace it with Douglas Fir that will also be treated and serve as a huge bond beam. The base and most of the Bear and salmon will have to be recarved. The epoxy we will be using to bond the wood repairs to the pole and new material will be stronger than the wood it's self.  Hope to have it up by September. Right now we are waiting to see if we can get the wood we need from a large company.
